Before each dance, the club hires a professional ballroom dance instructor to provide a 45 minute beginner to intermediate level group lesson. The style of dance covered is different each month. Many of our instructors are from the greater Madison area, with some instructors visiting us from Milwaukee, Appleton, Illinois, and Iowa.
No partner is required when attending our events. We encourage men and women alike to ask others to dance. See our article on dance etiquette for more information.
At our events you can dance to Waltz, Rumba, Foxtrot, East Coast Swing, West Coast Swing, Cha Cha, Tango, Samba, Mambo, Salsa, Nightclub 2-Step, Hustle, Quickstep, and Viennese Waltz.
A dance mixer is a way to dance with a number of different dance partners during a song.
For our Waltz and Foxtrot mixers, a leader line and follower line form next to each other. The lead and follow at the front of each line dance with each other around the dance floor. When they get to the back of the lines, they return to their respective lines and wait to get to the front again, where they will likely encounter a different partner every time.
With our Rumba mixer, the couples arrange themselves in a large circle. If you need a partner raise your hand this we let others now where a partner is needed. Every so often, the DJ announces to change partners. The followers move to the next lead in a counter-clockwise fashion(line of dance), and continue dancing.
What to Wear
Most of our events require "dressy-casual" attire. Men will be in good company wearing a button up shirt (with or without a tie) and slacks/khakis. Women will be in good company wearing a blouse and slacks or a comfortable dress. Events intended to be more formal will specifically publicize the requested attire.
It is important to bring non-street shoes for dancing. See our article on shoes for what this means.
